Biological determinants refer to factors that influence the individuals body including genetics, body weight and glucose levels. Lastly, environmental determinants relate to physical surrounding of the individual or population and how it impacts their ability to develop good health and wellbeing. Part C: ‘Improving Mental Health’ and its impact towards Indigenous Australians The priority area ‘Improving Mental Health’ will be examined in this section of the report, focusing particularly on the at-risk group of indigenous Australians (Victorian Government, 2015). This priority area highlights the effects of mental health on vulnerable populations and aims to achieve improving this priority area by promoting social inclusion and economic participation. The at-risk group related to this priority area has poorer health outcomes due to the stress of unemployment and unfavourable social, environmental and economic circumstances. Many Indigenous Australian become reluctant when seeking medical aid from health services due to their cultural beliefs of ‘white’ medicine by the older generation and experiences of past racism. The data shown from the Medicare Benefits Schedule observed, demonstrates that Indigenous Australians claim rates for specialist services were 40% lower than non-Indigenous (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2018. Those experiencing low mental health may use illicit substances and alcohol as a coping mechanism which only makes matter worse. The actions implemented to solve this problem includes enhancing and developing strategies to promote mental health and wellbeing, investing in early identification and intervention for families especially those with vulnerable children. Part D: Addressing three determinants; income, age and access to health services This particular section of the report will address the three determinants of health, including income, age and access to health services for the at-risk group ‘Indigenous Australians’ that refer back to the priority area ‘Improving Mental Health’. The social determinant ‘income inequality’ relates to the revenue that an individual or family earns in order exchange for necessities such as food, education, secured housing and 3

services that can ensure the promotion of good health and wellbeing (Wilkinson et al., 2003). According to a measurement of health conducted by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2017), this social determinant is recognised as the largest individual contributor to the health gap between Indigenous Australians and non-indigenous Australians. Lack of income can lead to individual having insufficient funds in order to access certain treatments and therefore prolonged undiagnosed illnesses that contributed to the overall burden of disease for that population area.
