Atom: the basic physical unit of an element i.e the smallest piece of matter that exhibits the properties of that element ; The physical characteristics of an atom determine the properties of the corresponding element. Atoms themselves are composed of tiny sub atomic particles. Electrons, protons, neutrons. They are the basic constituents of every atom in the universe. Structure of the atom: a small, dense nucleus of protons and neutrons, surrounded by a large diffuse cloud of electrons. Size : about 10^-10 m Each subatomic particle carries a specific electric charge. The electromagnetic force acts between the charged particles, exerting a force which depends on the charges involved. Two positively-charged or two negatively charged particles will repel each other. Two oppositely charged particles will attract one another Particles that are electrically neutral(carry no charge) do not experience this force. Identity of atoms: What gives an atom it’s particular chemical properties (and thus determines which element it corresponds to) ?

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
