On several occasions senior Iranian officials have publicly acknowledged this point. 46 (p.213) In September 2011, Mir Hossein Mousavi privately revealed to his family that his kidnapping, incarceration, and current situation were very similar to Gabriel García Márquez's novel, News of a Kidnapping (1996). The book recounts the kidnapping, imprisonment, and eventual release of a handful of prominent figures in Colombia in the early 1990s by the Medellín Cartel, operated by Pablo Escobar. To date, they have given a series of media interviews and lectures seeking to mobilize the Iranian expatriate community in support of democracy in Iran. 48 They also repeatedly issue communiques, press releases, and statements on contemporary Iranian affairs, including calls for Iranians to observe silent forms of protest on key anniversaries.
