[nearly one third of anthropogenic carbon dioxide has been taken up by the oceans, resulting lower
concentrations of carbonate ions and higher concentration. This has a significant impact of coral reef because,
coral reef depend on carbonate ions for future reef accretion
Coral reefs are biodiversity hotspots and provide habitat to a myriad of
organisms, including many fish species. Loss of coral cover, whether due
to OA, warming or other pressures on the reef, will lead to a shift in fish
communities from species that prefer coral habitats toward species
which are successful outside reef settings (
Pratchett et al., 2008
), with
associated potential changes to important reef fisheries.

Anthropogenic CO2 emissions are causing ocean acidification, which can affect the physiology of
marine organisms.
Research conducted at natural CO2 seeps over the past decade has revealed substantial changes in the
population structure of a wide range of organisms4,5. Studies have assessed impacts on species diversity
and abundance4,5,7,8, gene expression9, as well as functional potential of eukaryotic communities10.
From a microbial perspective, OA has also been shown to modify the composition of the microbiome in
some reef species11–13.
Question 5:
Briefly describe how ocean acidification
(another major related global change agent/phenomenon)
affects coral reefs. Also briefly describe the reasons for ocean acidification.
