stage 3 of the Life Cycle of Civilizations, or the Initial Decline stage. This means if we do not do something soon to change our ways, we could end up in stage 4, or the Breakdown stage. The extreme damage that humanity is placing on our environment is added indication for the “apocalypse” route that is a possible future for our planet. We are critically exploiting our natural resources. One report found that “humanity's load corresponded to 70% of the capacity of the global biosphere in 1961, and [it] grew to 120% in 1999”(Wackernagel et al., 2002). This suggests that human demand has most likely already exceeded the Earth’s regenerative capacity (Wackernagel et al. 2002). Humanity and its greed has not allowed the Earth’s natural resources to regenerate at their intended pace. This means that truly exceeding the earth's carrying capacity may be closer to happening than previously believed. An extreme loss of natural resources could lead to war between nations for access to these assets. Another sign of environmental collapse is advent of human induced climate change. “In the last 30 years, average global annual temperature has increased 0.6 °C, and by 2100 it is likely to increase an additional 4.0 °C” (Quintero & Wiens, 2013). This extreme, sudden change in climate is not completely natural; it is also affected by humanity’s increased production of greenhouse gases. Unfortunately this problem will only continue to get worse as the population on earth rises. As more people are born, there is going to be an increased demand for resources, with creates more greenhouse gas emissions. It is not helpful that many of the main contributors to this problem, such as factories, farms, and transportation, are essential for people to live out their lives happily. Although it might seem like the environmental apocalypse is imminent, there is an idea that could prove to be a solution. “Ecologism”, the ideology that the non-human world deserves 2

moral consideration, is seeking to change our worldview. As a worldview, ecologism seeks to

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
