makes. But I believe the effectiveness of this solution would outweigh the inconvenience and the costs. Smokers would be enticed to use the newly built designated smoking areas and therefore would do less smoking while walking or in non-designated areas. Create a Smoke-Free Policy – “As of January 2, 2013, at least 1,129 college or university campuses in the U.S. have adopted 100% smoke-free campus policies that eliminate smoking in indoor and outdoor areas across the entire campus, including residences” (“Colleges and Universities”). Adopting a smoke-free policy on the UMBC campus would be a difficult task, but it could be done. Implementing this policy would eliminate all smoking on campus, and for our campus, it could possible apply to only places within our 2-mile circle. This solution would be rather inconvenient for those who are smokers. For smokers who are on campus for the majority of the day, not being able to smoke wouldn’t be fair to them at all. “Regardless of the health benefits, opponents argue that smoke-free policies infringe on people's rights” because smoking is a “personal choice” (Steinberg). In the worst-case scenario, the outcome of a smoking ban could turn out to be detrimental if smokers on the campus decide to fight back. Best-case scenario, this solution wouldn’t cost the school anything; and looking at other schools, the results would be highly effective. Many schools reported that once their smoking bans were implemented, they didn’t see a smoker in sight and they had many students and faculty

seek tobacco treatment services (Steinberg). Take Away the Entire Policy – The final solution would be to completely allow smoking any and everywhere on campus. If UMBC doesn’t do anything about the current policy, instead of constantly letting people get away with not following the rules, the school shouldn’t have a smoking policy. Though this solution would be favorable for smokers, non-smokers would be left to deal with smoke wherever they go. This solution would be convenient and costless to the school. As an effect of this situation, non-smokers would

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
