However, the responsibility to ensure a product maintains an individual’s values, is entirely up to that individual. As a vegetarian, I am constantly having to lookup the production process and ingredients of everything from food to clothes to furniture. There is no cry to label everything non-Animal or Vegetarian Safe. It is up to me to educate myself, as it should be up to those people who are anti-GMO to educate themselves before purchasing a product.
Ivey_Timothy_NPR4 From Pets To Plates: Why More People Are Eating Guinea Pigs 1. Summarize this NPR story, in detail. Guinea pigs, often synonymous with pet ownership, have made, from their perspective, the unfortunate shift from playpen to plate. Common in South American cuisine, particularly in Peru, Guinea Pigs are now beginning to rise in popularity in U.S. cuisine. The benefits of eating Guinea Pig mostly have ecological impacts. Per The Nature Conservancy writer, Matt Miller, rodents such as Guinea Pigs “represent a low-impact meat alternative to carbon-costly beef.” Jason Woods of the humanitarian organization, Heifer International, shares Miller’s sentiments and states that Guinea Pigs, weighing no more than 2 pounds, are twice as efficient as cows. Where a cow would require 8 pounds of feed to render one pound of meat, Guinea pigs only need 4. Heifer International can provide a start-up farm with 2 males and seven females, which are doubled in only months. Such production can provide meat consistently for a family of six.
