ETHICAL DILEMMAS 6 awareness, creating a positive corporate image, and forming international connections that would enhance organizational efficiency in the long run ( Ahlin, 2019 ). An important note is that such benefits to the company can only happen if the event is conducted diligently and relates to the maxima principle. The organization also risks suffering unintended costs such as a negative corporate image by sponsoring the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to the adverse consequences that the past event had on the public ( Costa & Pelissari, 2017 ). Indeed the decisions on whether to support the 2020 Tokyo Olympics elicit an ethical dilemma that is beyond the application of professional and legal principles. This is because either of the available alternatives of actions relates to undesirable consequences. For instance, by sponsoring the Olympics, the company will contribute to developing talents and uniting the society, which is ethical. On the contrary, sponsoring the event will insinuate that the company supports the unethical issues that the Olympics has been involved in. Such activities include corruption, covering up doping activities, encouraging unfair competition, and hurting the natural environment. Application of the utilitarianism and Kantian philosophies offer contradicting positions on whether the organization should support the event, which implies that resolving the ethical dilemma, is beyond application of law and professional principles. Nevertheless, the company should make significant considerations that are outlined in this paper before choosing to support the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
