The Design Phase
According to McGonigle & Mastrian (2018) this phase is composed of two levels, the
high and low – level design phase. At the high design phase, the team establishes which
programs are needed. At the low-level phase, the team will explore how the individual programs

will work together. This phase is also focused on implementing the programming language or
database along with deciding the equipment’s look and shape. The nurse leader’s role is to make
sure that the system is user friendly, simple to adapt, adopt and finally utilize. Nurse leader’s
input is important at this phase, as nurses are primarily the ones using this system for all levels of
care. Nurse leaders should also give their input on what the desired features should be as to
improve the user’s techniques. According to Rojas and Seckman (2014), during the design phase,
hospital administrators should involve nurses, as nurses are the primary consumers and valuable
input would be provided.
The Implementation Phase
The fourth phase is called the implementation phase when the design is brought to life
through programming codes (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). Nurse leader will revise the codes
linked with the procedures as to ensure accuracy and policies are followed. At this phase, nurse
leaders will train superusers, who in turn will train staff on the new system. The nurse leader will
have an impact on real time implementation to ensure that the system runs smoothly.
