iii My beloved parents, Lilia & John Lehane, and Leo Toscano-Martinez, who instilled in me the drive to persevere and reach for the ultimate educational accolade: the title of Doctor I love you all dearly, and forever. To my dear colleague in the doctoral program (and best friend from high school) Silvia Ramirez, who encouraged me, reviewed my work, and provided the support that sustained me when my faith in myself wavered during this process. My family and friends proved to be an unending source of encouragement, a necessary ingredient for success. Thank you to my fabulous sisters Rose, Liz, Kathy, and Desiree Las Hermanas Martinez. Your love inspires me to achieve great things. Thank you to Marie Conde, Agueda Genera, Susan Watson, Dick Unsinn, Ed Marrero, Orny Wilcox, Julia Cook, Krista Martin, Stephanie Lacarrubba, and Harriet Anderson, my dear friends with whom I‟ve shared many joyous moments . Now that this masterpiece is complete, I look forward to many more moments of light and laughter. Most of all, I believe this academic endeavor would have been impossible to complete had it not been for my partner‟s unwavering belief in my ability as an academic researcher, Gil Liptack. He supported me during the early mornings, late nights and busy days as I worked through this process. You‟re wonderful , and now it‟s time for a cocktail. This great academic achievement, however, will never be surpassed by what I consider my best, shining moment: the birth of my daughter, Daniela. She is the light of my life, and the love of my soul. She is a beautiful, intelligent, gracious young woman of whom I am immensely proud. You‟re my best!

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
