Children do not heal from abuse but can be guided towards dealing with effects of abuse/neglect. Cognitive behavioral therapy can be used in treating children who are abused. Cognitive behavioral therapy is focused on treating symptoms of abuse including posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety (Archana & Don, 2019) Studies go to support that children who experienced sexual abuse respond better to cognitive behavioral therapy better than children who undergo other forms of therapy ( Archana & Don, 2019). Child abuse is a major society and public health issue. Department of Health and Human services describes child abuse as the failure of a caregiver/parent to act to protect a child leading to death, serious physical harm, or emotional harm, sexual exploitation, or exploitation of a child causing risk for serious harm to the child ( Fregia, 2018). Health care providers should use every opportunity in interacting with the child to assess for abuse. Healthcare providers have the obligation to report abuse to the proper authorities.
