• A key way to change gender inequality is to change how girls, families and society imagine what girls can do and can be (the g). Girls need to have positive images and role models. Building girls and women's confidence could lead to more female engineers or entrepreneurs (Leach, 2016). • Get more women into power! A guaranteed way to overcome systemic barriers towards women is to increase the participation by women in local, regional, and national legislation (Sullivan, 2016). A women's voice and her ability to become a leader in her community is fundamental to empowering women (Leach, 2016)
Actual solutions to gender inequality • In 1975, the Sex Discrimination Act was passed. Which states that it is illegal for an employer to discriminate against people because of their sex (Sexual discrimination, 2018, 15th paragraph). Five years before that the Equal Pay Act was passed and it states that a person doing the same job should be paid equally regardless of their sex (Sexual discrimination, 2018, 15th paragraph). These have been the solutions to the problem of inequality in the workplace since the 1970’s and not much has changed about laws being passed or implemented. Knowing that there are laws to protect equal working conditions and pay is reassuring but there need to also be a system in place that checks back with employers every quarter to ensure they are treating employees fairly. That women are being treated as equals to their males’ counterparts and that men are given a fair opportunity in all roles, even the one “society” say are only for women.
