balance and recorded the mass of the crucible to 0.1mg. The students then proceeded to repeat this initial process of heating the crucible and weighing it until they had two measures that were within 2mg of one another. Once the two measurements that were within the 2 mg tolerance had been obtained the students averaged out the values and recorded the new value as the tare weight of the crucible. Then the students weighted out a mass of 0.241g on the top loading balance. Having weighed the magnesium strips using tongs the students transferred the magnesium to the crucible and again obtained its mass on the analytical balance to within 0.1 mg and recorded this value as “gross weight Mg only”. Having recorded the mass of the crucible with the magnesium the crucible was then returned to the clay triangle, the lid was placed on and it was heated gently by moving the flame back and forth on the bottom of the crucible for 2-3 minutes. After heating gently for 3 minutes the flame was then let to rest underneath the bottom of the crucible and it was heated strongly for an additional 3 minutes. The students then moved the lid slightly back to allow air into the crucible and peek to see in the magnesium was reacting by glowing. The cover was then placed back and the crucible was reheated for another 2 minutes. The students repeated heated and opening the lid until the magnesium was no longer glowing. Once the magnesium had

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
