ofdogs after slaves, andofthefugitiveslave catchers, evil white men with whips and clubs and chains and guns. Iread abouttheslave preacher Nat Turner, whoputthe fearofGod intothewhite slavemaster. Nat Turner wasn't going around preaching pie-in-the-sky and "non-violent" freedom for the black man. There in Virginia onenight in 1831, Nat and seven other slaves started out at his master's homeand throughthenight they went from one plantation "big house" tothenext, killing, until bythenext morning 57 white people were dead and Nathad about 70 slaves following him. White people, terrified for their lives, fled from their homes, locked themselvesupinpublic buildings, hid inthewoods, and some even left the state. A small armyofsoldiers took twomonths to catch and hang Nat Turner. Somewhere I have read where NatTurner's exampleissaid to have inspired John Brown16to invade Virginiaand attack Harpers Ferry nearly thirty years later, with thirteen whitemenandfiveNegroes.I read Herodotus,17"the fatherofHistory," or, rather, I read abouthim. And I read the historiesofvarious nations, which opened my eyesgradually, then wider and wider, to howthewhole world's white men hadindeed acted like devils, pillaging and raping and bleeding and draining thewhole world's non-white people. I remember, for instance, bookssuchasWill Durant'sThe StoryofOriental Civilization, and Mahatma Gandhi's18accountsofthestruggletodrivetheBritish outofIndia.Book after book showedmehowthewhite man had brought upontheworld's black, brown, red, and yellow peopleseYeryYarietyofthe sufferingofexploitation. I saw how sincethesixteenth century, the so-called "Chris-tian trader" white man began to ply the seasinhis lust for Asian and Africanempires, and plunder, and power. I read, I saw, how the white man neverhas gone among the non-white peoples bearingtheCrossinthetrue man-nerand spiritofChrist'steachings-meek, humble, and Christlike.I perceived,asI read, howthecollective white man hadbeenactually30nothingbuta piratical opportunist who used Faustian machinations19to14Uncle Tom's Cabin:Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 antislavery novel.15Abolitionist:Advocatingtheprohibitionofslavery.16John Brown:American abolitionist (1800-1859); leaderofan attackonHarpers Ferry,West Virginia, in 1859.17Herodotus:Early Greek historian (484?-425?B.C.E.).18Mahatma Gandhi:Hindu religious leader, social reformer, and advocateofnonviolence(1869-1948).19Faustian machinations:Evil plotsorschemes.
