and why it was working, it helped me dramatically because he would express his creativity with me, which in time helped me be more creative with my drills. I pride myself on being able to present new drills and ideas to my players to keep them interested and improve their skills at the same time. My knowledge and motivation are closely related because with my knowledge and creativity of the game I can help bring new ideas to spark the player’s interest and motivation. I am also very motivated to continue to learn and improve on my skills as a teacher and coach. If I get better at teaching my players how to improve then they will become better basketball players. My style as a coach will be a cooperative style and look at it as more of a teacher than a dictator. A cooperative coach defined by Martens, in Successful Coaching (2004), “Share decision making with their athletes… youngsters cannot become responsible adults without learning to make decisions” (Martens 31). I agree fully with this statement and believe that athletes need to be able to think and make decisions on their own without someone always telling them what to do. It is a big part of growing up and maturing. I want my players to learn from their mistakes and grow from their missteps of the past. This stands true for both on and off the court. The offense that we run right now at Romulus is a dribble-drive motion like the University of Kentucky runs. This offense allows our players to use their playmaking abilities to create shots for themselves and their teammates. It gives them enough freedom to make decisions but is also structured when it comes to rotating when a player drives. This offense is very successful right now for us because we have a bunch of

playmakers and highly skilled guards who can break defenders down and make decisions. My coaching staff and I will be able to help our players make these decisions but not decide for them, by teaching them the game of basketball. Their own decisiveness and creativity is a key in the system. Dr. Homer Rice makes a very good point about decision making in his article, Attitude Technique and Leadership Principles, saying that, “Lack of decisiveness is the major cause of failure” (Rice, 2003). This quote is especially true in this offense were decision-making is the key. The players enjoy this offense because it is high tempo with a high number of shots, and it gives them freedom. Although this offense is highly successful I might not always run it, simply because if you do not have the skilled playmakers, it is not as effective. My offense philosophy will always have some dribble drive movements in it but will change and vary depending on what type of players I have on my team. The cooperative coaching style is one that is similar to my personality and my beliefs. My goal for every one of my players is for them to reach their maximum potential through hard work and dedication. These are two values that will be huge in my program along with character, responsibility, trust and respect. I feel that these values will not only help my players become better athletes but better people in the long run. One of the biggest values I will stress will be accountability, especially with being on time. One
