Sincerely, Dr. Melody Mikelson Assignment 2:1.The ginseng must increase the concentration of nitric oxide. Increased amounts of nitric oxide would activate more guanylyl cyclase which would react with more cGMP. Because cGMP is the second messenger that allows the pathway to continue, the increased amount of cGMP could allow for the dog to perform properly. Ginseng is known to help in the synthesis of nitric oxide, so that would play a major role in this cell pathway. 2.Because cGMP leads both to PDE5, which does not continue the pathway, and PKG,
which does continue the pathway, Viagra would probably inhibit the PDE5. This would allow for more of the cGMP to continue to PKG and lead to erection without wasting cGMP on PDE5.3.If neither chemical works, the problem would most likely be with a protein later in the pathway, beyond the cGMP, since both the ginseng and Viagra effect this messenger. Because the next molecule in the pathway beyond cGMP is PKG, this enzyme, cGMP dependent protein kinase, is probably dysfunctional and is keeping the dog from erecting.
