pollution of our seas and water and also landfills. Recycling aluminium can reduce the energy required to produce brand new cans. The recycled aluminium can return to the shelf as a new can in a short period of time. This proves recycling is an effective method for waste management because the demand to mine for these metals can be brought down. Composting Compost is organic matter that has been decomposed in a process called composting. Although there are various methods that can be used for composting, all the elements of composting can be used for most house hold circumstances. Composting has numerous advantages over other waste management options. It is an option that employs environmental friendliness. It is effective, less costly and efficient. Compost can be used as a bio-fertilizer and it has less impact on air and water pollution. Composting house hold organic wastes can lead to significant reduction of food waste that will be added to landfills. In addition, it also has an advantage over where poverty- stricken countries lack the infrastructure for waste management. Landfills Land fill is a site for the disposal of waste materials by burial. It is the most common method of waste disposal in many parts of the world. The wastes in a landfill is filled in layers and compacted to reduce volume. This method of waste disposal has both advantages and disadvantages. There are technical requirements, socio-economic and environmental aspects regarding this method of waste disposal. Landfill sites should implement a protective bottom to avoid ground water contamination. Landfill is method is an effective way to dispose waste if only it can be managed well. However, a dedicated operator should ensure waste management procedures are followed accordingly. Incineration Incineration is a waste management process includes the burning of organic elements contained in waste materials. The destruction of waste converts to energy and its byproducts. In addition it also helps to reduce the volume of solid wastes by thermal degradation. However, it releases many harmful gases to the surrounding environment. Incineration should be practiced in isolated areas where urban population is far away. The ashes that remain after the incineration process is more inert, thus it does not cause bad impact to the environment. The energy that is released during the process of incineration can be used to run boiler tanks and the production of electricity. Common social problems in Maldives due Waste. Air contamination In Maldives air quality is generally considered good because in small island the sea breeze flushes air masses easily but the air quality is deteriorating in densely populated island such as Male’. It is due to rapid urbanization, increased economic growth, increased number of land and sea vessels, construction and open burning in the near waste island Thilafushi. In islands, waste burning at dumpsites and backyards contribute to air pollution. In addition to local pollution, trans-boundary
