what is the incentive to develop such genetic medications at great cost when others may simply copy them? The good news is that naturally occurring genes have not been allowed patents in the US since 2013. Relevant: Did the movie change your view of the responsibility of business? No it has not. As a biologist, I hold every bit of natural resource in our planet precious, however, the documentary echoes the sentiment of a pluralistic working class, left behind in society by the business community. For historical reasons, they see the corporation as the enemy. Harm that come to the handicapped, the sick and the elderly who are discriminated against, disenfranchised and left behind from the decision making process of the corporation resonates well with me, but the claim by many anarchists and anti- fascists that all corporations are bad is simply not true. However, corporations have done many good deeds for society. Deeds that have allowed the human population to explode and be well fed. Look at how Apple’s innovation has

improved people’s lives, created jobs, created wealth by enhancing our 401K retirement plan, etc. Let us appreciate how Microsoft has changed the scientific community with Windows OS and Excel. Without them where are we going to be today? We need business, however the manner in which they conduct themselves to gain profit must be aligned and guided by a rigid code of conduct of which sustainability to our planet’s ecosystem is paramount. To simply put, corporations need to mind use of raw resources for the future generation. In today’s world, many of the issues raised in the documentary are being addressed or at least acknowledged. The world today is not the world yesterday. People are more vigilant and the prying eye of social media is everywhere. From dolphins and sea turtles drowning in tuna nets, orangutans burned alive from deforestation to make room for palm oil production, to the giant plastic polluted mass in the middle of the Pacific Ocean bigger than the state of Texas, you can bet that social media is ready to make the issue viral online. Sure problems still exist and more needs to be done, however, the fear of having an environmental calamity going public in social media that results in consumer backlash and boycott has prompted many to jump the bandwagon and become more responsible and sustainable in their ways, even if only symbolically. Western consumers of today also seek and demand fresh and organic produce free of chemicals in their produce and growth hormones in their meat. They also demand that supplies of food be produced sustainably and humanely.
