Hollywood Ten and to never employ a communist. Dishonorably, the Screen Writers Guild fully supported this statement. Dalton Trumbo went from being Hollywood’s top writer to being sentenced to jail. Dalton Trumbo’s work has deeply been affected by the Hollywood Blacklist. He joined the Communist Party USA after the second world war in 1943. He felt no wrong in doing so. However, the American congress felt differently about his political belief. Subpoenaed to the HUAC hearings, as he was fighting for the freedom of speech he refused to speak under the first Amendment. He accused the HUAC investigations as a disgraceful infraction of the civil rights. The First Amendment permitted him to possess the right to be attached to any political organization he chose. Other screenwriters and filmmakers heard also refused to cooperate and they became known as the Hollywood ten. Trumbo had already been blacklisted for 6 months in late 30’s but for other reasons. In fact, when Trumbo was already established as a successful novelist and screenwriter, Warner bros forced him to switch from the Screen
Writers Guild union to the Screen playwrights one. Refusing, the studio blacklisted him for six months. However, this time due the fear of communism, McCarthyism and the thoroughly involved American government strongly damaged Trumbo’s career. Refusing to cooperate and as part of the Hollywood Ten, major Hollywood’s studio decided to distance themselves from him. The HUAC broke the Fist Amendment rule and sentenced to jail the Hollywood Ten. Trumbo appealed multiple times to court but as he refused to discuss his membership in the Communist Party he was eventually sentenced to prison and spent eleven month in behind bars in Ashland. After prison, the screenwriter continued to fight for his personal freedom. With the ongoing Korean War, The Cold War was at its height so Dalton decided to retreat himself from Hollywood and went to live with other backlist exiles in a little community in Mexico. Although McCarthy was not directly involved with the HUAC the McCarthyism term can accurately be address to this issue as it meant that people were accused of being communist without proper evidence and the first backlists “the Hollywood ten” open the door to many more blacklist many with which they had no formal proof to support their accusation. These victims suffered unfairly and it significantly contributed to the Cold war tensions. Ronald Reagan justified the purge by saying that it the Hollywood Ten could overthrow the America way of life by carrying out the wishes of a foreign government. Deliberately what happened to Dalton Trumbo shows one thing: the political implication in Hollywood and the nationwide importance of Hollywood. According to Steve ross, an historian specialized in “Political Hollywood” it demonstrates “the power of movies and the political consciousness of the nation”.He also points out that the fear about radicalism in the movie industry reflect that the Left wing had no monopoly in the film’s capital.
