hurricane in the final few chapters of the book. Fighting Janie every step, Tea Cake believes that nothing can stop him, not even God himself. However, nature does get the best of him, though not in the way he

thought. Sacrificing himself to save Janie, he is bitten by a rabid dog and contracts the disease. This creates a Disillusion in Tea Cake, revealing his darkest, most vile self. Tea Cake’s effect on Janie, shaping her into an independent and equal to those around her, turns out to come at the ultimate price. In the end when Janie shoots and kills Tea Cake, she cements herself as an independent individual who is no longer a wife, or a widow, but a Human in her own right. Tea Cake, though a relatively young and still somewhat enigmatic character, helps to define Janie as a whole and help her discover her true identity. In the end, she is Saddened by the loss of Tea Cake, but yet is content with her life and who she is as an individual. Tea Cake’s personal change as well as his effect on Janie’s Individuality contributed to multiple important themes from Their Eyes Were Watching God. The direct change in Tea Cake shows that even the best of men can be overcome by hubris and bested by nature, as well as his treatment of Janie helping to develop her character and depth as an independent woman, despite the time period. Though we don’t learn much about tea cake before his emergence into the story, nor of his past throughout his life in the novel, we do get to see who he is in the moment, and how he influences change and independence in Janie.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
