among other white members of society as the odds were against them. In this case they benefit from the safety society provides them. These two sides place our protagonist in a very difficult situation but his choice leads him to a sufficient reward, achieving happiness. The first decision would have brought conflict with the white members of society. They viewed our protagonist as an animal who does not deserve to voice his opinion, and object to the things he found wrong in their system. This speech served as an objection would have been perceived as a challenge of authority and would have cause a violent reaction. However, the speech lost its effect due to the status the speaker was in while presenting. Although he remained strong he had been ridiculed too much to have been taken seriously by the audience. And the second choice would led to the loss of self, something not so easily recovered.
