De Lome Letter Letter from the Spanish minister to the US to a colleague in Cuba in 1898 which criticized President McKinley. This outraged American public opinion and lead to the Spanish American War of 1898 Roosevelt Corollary Roosevelt’s reinterpretation of the Monroe doctrine to justify US intervention in Latin America and the creation of US protectorates in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Panama, and Haiti between 1903 and 1916. The corollary argues that if other counties in the Americas fail to uphold order then the Monroe doctrine forces the US to intervene. Yellow Press Newspapers that sensationalized the news in order to increase their circulation and manipulate public opinion. The name came from the first color cartoon, The Yellow Kid that came to represent the debased editorial policy of the New York Journal. The Yellow Press exaggerates incidents such as scary headlines, private details, scandals, and using developments in Cuba. Consequences included the increased importance of public opinion of foreign policy.
