˃ Strengths of the Community According to officer R. S. (personal communication, April 10, 2019), the strength of this community is their wide variety of health and recreational facilities, which provides the people many opportunities to improve their well-being. I cannot forget to include the private college preparatory school and Catholic University that is within walking distance of each other. There are also many local gyms, CrossFit and yoga studios within a ten blocks radius. Of course, there’s the bay and local recreational centers that are within driving or walking distance of a transit stop. Because of the beautiful San Diego weather, there’s always people out and about doing their business outdoors. This community is noted to be health conscientious people where very few people are noted to be smoking. The strength of Mission Valley lies within what the community has to offer its people and the people who are visiting. Mission Valley has had an influx 4465-4-19_
of gyms, yoga and exercise studios such as Orange Theory and Cross Fit gyms popping up all over town. In reference to Officer R. S.’s interview (personal communication, April 10, 2019), people are noted to be less overweight and more active. Most people are observed in athletic wear or gym clothing. There are plenty of outdoor recreational activities for just about anyone. You can go ride your bikes along the bay or if one needs an adrenaline rush, they can try out jet-skiing or stand up paddle boarding. Others nearby communities, such as Linda Vista, offer a variety of different cultural experiences, such as the Chinese New Year celebration and the Multi- Cultural festivals. 2. Interview with librarian, school teacher, school nurse or administrator school teacher T. W. at Thrive Public School ˃ Community’s Health issues Speaking with T. W. from a nearby elementary school (personal communication, April 10, 2019), one of the major health issues this community of Linda Vista is at risk for is obesity. Many people in the area appear to be overweight. Most students bring unhealthy snack foods that are high in calories and sugar content, simply because it’s very convenient for them. Most of these students have both working parents, possibly with some working two jobs to support their families. Furthermore, leading to lack of time to prepare home meals and an increased desire to grab meals from fast food chains and restaurants. Another issue is the influenza outbreak back in 4465-4-19_
February of this year. Twenty students within the school contracted the flu virus prompting the principle to send out notices. This was mostly due to lack of knowledge about the importance of vaccines and a language barrier. Most people living in this community do not speak English and if so, their English is very limited.
