Lying to your employees and not being forth coming can cause a real disconnect in the company; the employees can feel that if you cannot keep your word you are not trustworthy of their loyalty. This will bring rise to unethical behavior in the employees and can quickly spiral out of control. An organization should be the champion for ethics, encourage it among their employees, and set clear and decisive expectations and rules (Rodriguez, M. 2015). Ways to combat unethical behavior in a company is to first have a written code of ethics and code of conduct; this will set the tone and should also be exhibited in the policies and
4 procedures. There should be something put in place that if there are some issues as to what is ethical and what is not, a resource is available to the staff this could be in the form of an ethics committee. The presence of upper and lower management exhibiting examples and behaviors that should be the trademark of the company also maintains the goal of ethical behavior in the workplace. (Schwartz) The last 100 years represents an evolving of work ethics that has put many rules and laws in place to adhere to work place ethics. The end of slavery, fair wages, FMLA, and the disability act are just a few. The end of slavery in the United States and the end of genocide of the Indians gave a new beginning to the way our country looked at ethics and a change that would keep building on the ethics in the workplace. The fair wages law was enacted to establish a pay wage that would address the long 18 hour days and pennies being paid to Americans. Family Medical Leave Act is a law that protects the job of an employee and allots for a period of time that they may care for themselves or love ones and not be penalized or terminated from your position as a result of the time taken. (US Department of labor) The business workplace of today is much more ethical than the businesses of yesteryear, there is still work to be done but at the present moment there are laws put in place that have made misconduct and unethical behavior unacceptable it is no longer the norm in the workplace. Integrity plays a great role in the presence the ethics in the workplace today. Honesty and trustworthiness are factors that can be expected in today’s workplace; days gone by it was neither a right nor a privilege. The meltdown in 2007-2008, was a result of the banks and Wall Street looking to make a profit on the backs of hard working Americans. Years previous to this meltdown there were loans
