1 Introduction The purpose of this report is to evaluate options for growing the Abbraccio Pottery business in Bunbury, Prince Edward Island. Our contract for the investigation was signed with the managing partner on Friday, February 14, 2016. Background Piero (Peter) Pugliani moved to PEI from Trieste in Friuli, Italy, in 2011. He learned pottery making from his father, who owned a commercial business manufacturing terra cotta tiles for roofs and other construction materials, but who also made ceramic art pieces as a lucrative hobby. Peter started making ceramics as a teen and had his first gallery show when he was 20. On vacation in Canada in 2010, he met and married Angelica Brunetti of Montreal, and they settled in PEI because of the lifestyle and vibrant art scene. They opened Abbraccio Pottery near Bunbury in 2012; the name means “snuggle” or “embrace” in Italian. Peter has a degree in archaeology from the University of Padua, one of the oldest universities in the world. He developed an interest in prehistoric ceramics of the New World that is reflected in his art pieces. His pottery line includes both creative and utilitarian work like kitchen stoneware. He is best known in the art world for his reproductions of aboriginal ceramic styles from the American Southwest and from Central and South American cultures, especially his variations on Moche erotic motifs. Currently his work is available at his craft studio and at a co-operative gallery in Kensington, which operates on a consignment basis. Some custom pieces have been created for and shipped to regular clients in Italy. Methodology Some preliminary work was conducted online and over the phone. Indira Gupta of Interconnected Media Research in Charlottetown assisted with developing the online shop and social media options. Two local galleries generously offered tours of their facilities and commented on the suitability of work from Abbraccio Pottery . Staff at Innovation PEI in Charlottetown contributed information that could be used later in a more comprehensive business or marketing plan. Growth Options Option A: Studio Tour and Listings The studio tour in PEI is continuous throughout the summer season. The current PEI studio tour includes 61 studios offering crafts of all descriptions. , Good promotion is essential for getting the information to the tourist art customer. This is mostly done online, although studio tour brochures are also available at PEI Tourism centres across the Island. There are 3 good promotional websites for promoting a studio in PEI.
