h To be in UN, NAFTA, any country club, these countries/states have to give up a little bit of sovereignty – gotta play by the rules h US gives $ to fund UN, but DOES NOT give soldiers (don’t want our soldiers being led by anyone but our own military) – do this to piss off French h Military leaders of NATO are usually US o Our troops always under our command h AU has increasing amts. Of importance o 1 main thing they’re doing to make them popular: sending troops into African conflicts (in Nigeria, Gold Coast, etc) o Don’t want UN, US, UK troops -Some supranaturalist ODDBALLS… o G-8 Summit: US, UK, Russia, France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan o Richest, greatest economies o China missing h Used to be called G-7. G-7 + Russia = G-8 o WTO (World Trade Organization) o Everyone on planet wants in o Economic summit happens 1-2 times a year o IMF (International Monetary Fund) o Stabilizes international currency (don’t lend money, but helps collapsing currencies) Hated in developing countries b/c have a lot of power o World Bank o Bank that lends $ to countries to fund projects ---------- hN. American Region o US, Canada -Region: unit that has homogeneous trait, something in common -US & Canada: language, economy, culture (religion), urbanization levels, levels of development, wealth, developed, population pyramid o Different from Mexico -Why so GREAT? – Biggest economy, US: richest country, military strength, diversity of climate, alcohol consumption #1 (minus vodka), freedom & rights, technology champs for now, education (#1 for college level) 1) A tale of great physical geography o Mountains, coasts, flatlands, forests, resources (all) o Climates: all – get all types of food o Diversity (anyone can find someplace to live) o Lots of space

o 330 million people o 2 of biggest countries on planet o lots of distance – from terrorists, from France, from war (only invaded twice – 1812 & Pearl Harbor) h greatest bonus: far from everyone else – people that hate us, people at war o last huge place of mid-latitude climates that were unoccupied – older places used resources long before us 2) We’re RICH!!! $$$ o Resources, history, capitalism, fully developed, good jobs/social programs o Freedom – to do anything h resources, highest levels of technology, birthplace of new ideas, risk-taking, hypermobility! = choices, US: “A platform for success ” b/c people came from all over the world h brain drain: smartest people from other countries leave b/c political overthrow, war, collapsing economies (smart & rich people CAN leave) o Primarily come here – US 3) Personally, WE DON’T GIVE A SHIT! o Demise of the nation-state? o Power of immigration – Brain Drain o Changing demographics of US h 200 years ago = European base o Now most from Latin America & Asia o Matter of time before white not majority o Changes the representation in gov’t (south US has lots of people, N, NE losing people) o Candian population all at power -Not so GREAT?
