The Research School and REMESO The Research School in Migration, Economy and Society forms an integral part of REMESO and aims to strengthen the teaching and research on the close inter- play between migration, economy and society, as out- lined in the application. The application stresses the need for a critical scrutiny of the international norms and legal frameworks currently regulating migration and the incorporation of migrants and their offspring in European societies and labour markets. It also stresses the need to amend and revise a good portion of the established theo- retical frameworks for explaining existing migration policies and their relation to policy developments within the economy, labour market, welfare and public policy. Given the current and future importance of these themes and questions, we propose a research school that through various courses, seminars and supervision will educate future researchers within the area. The researchers who will be educated under the aus- pices of the Research School in Migration, Economy and Society will develop a special competence within this multi- and interdisciplinary field. The aim is to further stimulate research and to warrant a fruitful long-term development within the area. The application builds upon the idea to educate individual scholars but also to furnish the national and international research community with scholarship of international repute. Background and platform for the research school The Research School in Migration, Economy and Society will be developed on a range of already existing plat- forms that, inter alia , consist of a seven-year collabora- tion between Linköping University (LiU) and National Institute for Working Life. This involves a formalized co- operation around a PhD programme in Ethnic Studies at Linköping University’s Department of Ethnic Studies, which makes up the only PhD programme in Sweden with examination rights in this field of research. The na- tional and international contacts that have been acquired by the collaborating partners have developed over the years and include , inter alia , Socrates/Erasmus agree- ments with the universities of Frankfurt, Florence, Crete, Granada and Warwick, as well as cooperation within different networks such as EURESCO. Fruitful contacts have also been established with The International PhD research school in Frankfurt with the aim to establish future cooperation. To that should be added the impor-
