Rome is the “Eternal City.” It sits on the Tiber River. The Colosseum – ancient gladiator stadium, art history Forum – center of the Roman Empire, now a broad are of ruins Spanish Steps – gathering place for locals and tourists Trevi Fountain –Throw a coin over your left shoulder and you’ll return to Rome. The Pantheon – domed Roman building, second century AD. Vatican City – independent country, St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel 7. What and where is the Vatican? Vatican City is an independent country inside Italy. Seat of Roman Catholicism, home to the Pope, St. Peter’s Basilica the world’s larges church, Sistine Chapel 8. Describe Venice. City made up of 118 islands, 150 canals, 400 bridges. Very expensive and overcrowded, pollution is a big problem. St. Marks’s Square and Basilica, Near Verona – Romeo and Juliet 9. Why should you not have a hotel room facing the street if you visit Florence? Rooms facing the street have a lot of noise pollution from mopeds. 10. Pg. 295 – chickpeas and bacon are now what? Ancient Romans placed chickpeas and bacon sealed jars and exported to the rest of the Empire. That’s where we get Pork and Beans. 11. What are the major misgivings tourists have about visiting Italy? Expensive – pre-book tours. Disorganized – get escorted tours. Crime – most are petty offences

Autobahn: German road with no speed limits or only “suggested” speed limits. Romantic Road: string of medieval cities and Roman ruins 200 miles long starting in Bavaria and stretching north to Wurzburg. Main places: Nordlingen, Dinkelsbuhl, and Rothenburg. 5. Know the factors that motivate visitors to visit Germany. Bavaria’s scenery is spectacular. Germany is very accessible, clean, and organized.
