After Harvey, Federal forces reported that they had rescued 10,000 people and people who owned boats joined in the force to help rescue people as well. Texas shelters housed 37,000 displaced individuals and Louisiana shelters housed 2,000. Temporary housing was created for these people who were left without home sand FEMA moved about 14,900 people to these

Hurricanes 8 homes. Hotel rooms were also used as temporary shelter, and 9,000 hotel rooms had been used for 8,000 families as of September 1, 2017. [Kim18]. The hurricane also damaged or destroyed 1 million vehicles, 75 schools remained closed out of 275 schools in Houston’s school district and there were still 3,900 homes without power several weeks after the Harvey had dissipated. [Kim18]. Hurricanes leave damage that not only takes time to repair, but there are other factors which are affected by hurricanes after the fact. While there are homes, schools, stores, and other building structures which need to be rebuilt, there are also power poles and lines to replace, roads to rebuilt and a gigantic mess to clean up. Hurricanes cause flooding, and with flooding, things can be moved by water miles from where they belong. Water becomes contaminated instantly and creating safe drinking water again takes time. Hurricanes also disrupt oil production, the shipment of goods and products, different manufacturing processes and facilities, and the procurement and use of raw building materials. [Bil18]. Millions of jobs are lost due to the displacement of individuals and families, and people are left without just homes but without their places of employment. There is also a strong demand to rebuild the damaged areas that were affected by the hurricane. [Bil18]. Not only are humans severely affected by hurricanes, but the environment and nature are extremely impacted by hurricanes. Manmade debris and pollution which is carried throughout the flooded areas clog waterways and streets, creating a pollution problem which could take months to clean. Toxic chemicals from gasoline in cars and other vehicles, antifreeze, cleaning fluids, and other solvents mix together in the flooding, causing environmental damage by flowing through trees and potentially killing anything living. Any container is likely to leak, those carrying gasoline or other fluids, which also contaminate the water in the area of the

Hurricanes 9 hurricane. Any destroyed building has the potential of growing dangerous molds and causing asbestos to fall into the flood water, further contributing to the contamination of water. Animals in the areas affected by hurricanes are among the casualties of such a weather event, having their own home environments destroyed in the process and drowning any animal that comes in the way of the major flooding. [Rob17].
