exile during the Glorious Revolution, Parliament offered the throne to a Protestant, William of Orange, from the Netherlands. William became William III, King of England but with restrictions from Parliament for a constitutional monarchy. The Constitution of 1688 stated that he and his heirs were to remain Protestant and were subject to the law, so they never could aspire to be absolutists. The Ottoman Empire’s government type was more militarized than their Western counterparts. The Sultan was the ruler and all subordinates with military ranks working as a sort of “standing army” under the centralized Ottoman state. When the Ottomans conquered new lands, the Sultan allowed the local nobility and aristocracy keep their lands on the condition that they swear their allegiance to him. To keep the aristocracy in check, the Sultan had janissaries, non-Muslim boys that were trained to be soldiers and taught Islam. These janissaries were loyal only to the sultan and would protect him in case there was ever a revolt by the aristocracy. In this system, your social status was based on how close you were to the Sultan. This type of system, arguably created more stability than the Western counterpart of absolutism.
