husband in such high esteem that it’s difficult to conceive that he would share an opinion so opposite to her own. Submissiveness can be summed up as a shackling of someone (in this case women) to a position in which they hold a certain people (in this case men) as above themselves or in higher esteem. Under the cult of domesticity, housewives revere the ideas of men, tend to the family, and carry out the actions of the home. Prompt 3.7 10/28/18 Agree or disagree with Jefferson's statement that "Men by their constitutions are naturally divided into two parties." Provide your best reason for holding that position and relate it to the emergence of Whigs and Democrats as representatives of the nation's first two-party political system. Over the past 150 some-odd years, our political system has been dominated by two prevailing parties diametrically opposed. So by that alone, I would have to agree with Jefferson. I think there’s definitely an argument to be made that we are divided into two parties, but for the most part political issues are binary ordeals. One of the main reasons for this occurrence is due to the fact that mostly political parties get created in order to directly oppose another. The
HIS 315K Whigs were a party that formed in direct opposition to Andrew Jackson and the Democratic Party. In “Whigs and Democrats” by David Walbert, Walbert explains “t he opposition coalesced into the Whig Party, which named itself after the Whigs of the Revolution and of eighteenth- century Britain who opposed the strong monarchy.” The Whigs entire platform was based around opposing Jackson’s Democratic Party due to the implication that Jackson was using his executive powers to become more monarchic. Even things like Jackson’s vetoing of the charter for the Second Bank of America acts as an example of the power of partisan politics. Jackson’s vetoing of the charter for the Second Bank of America was an act of political tunnel-vision that directly led to the Panic of 1837. In conclusion, I think Jefferson’s statement holds a lot of water due to the inherent truth about our political institution. From the very beginning we’ve aligned our political parties to be either for or against, Federalist or Anti-Federalist, Whig or Democrat, Democrat of Republican. Additionally, we’ve created our political parties reactionarily which further sets us down a path of party polarization. Whigs, since their very inception, were created to denounce the policy decisions of Andrew Jackson and the Democratic Party, and it is that very partisanship that clouds the judgements of our politicians into choosing their side in spite of what is correct. Prompt 3.6 10/27/18 Identify the two most persuasive arguments put forward in your set of team's set of readings.
