HAND WASHING Definition: It is considered one of the most effective infection control measures. It is very important in every setting where people are ill, including hospitals. Its goal is to remove transient microorganisms that might be transmitted to clients, visitors or other health care personnel . It is important that hands be washed at the following times to prevent the spread of these microorganisms: a. before eating b. after using the bedpan or toilet c. after the hands have come in contact with any body substances, such as sputum or drainage from a wound For routine client care, it is recommended to perform a vigorous hand washing under 20 seconds using bar soap, granule soap, soap-filled tissues, or antimicrobial liquid soap. Liquid soaps are frequently supplied in dispensers at the sink. Antimicrobial soaps are usually provided in high risk areas, e.g., the newborn nursery. Equipment: soap warm running water towels Procedure: 1. Prepare and assess your hands. File the nails short. Rationale: short nails are less likely to harbour microorganisms or scratch a client. Long nails are hard to clean. Remove jewelry, except a plain wedding band, from the hands and arms. Some nurses slide their watches above their elbows. Others pin the watch to the uniform . Rationale: Microorganisms can lodge in the settings of jewelry.
