Paula AbdulPaula Abdul was born North Hollywood, CA in 1962 to a Syrian-Brazilian and French Canadian parents. Abdul gained her earliest fame as a dancer and choreographer She started dance lessons at age eight, studying tap, ballet and modern styles and became a high school cheerleader. Abdul landed a job on the Lakers' cheerleading squad, eventually becoming their choreographer and squad leader. With dancing the main focus of her videos, she was crowed the new "dance rock diva" In june 1988, Abdul's Forever Your Girlalbum is released on Virgin Records, with the #1 single "Straight Up" "Opposite Attract" is from the Forever Your Girl album The track was recorded in 1988 and released the next year as single The effective dance-oriented groove runs throughout the song, with a variety of synths and harmonies. Vocalist and guitarist Bonnie Raitt was born in 1949 in Burbank,CA She blended Blues with Pop and Rock to become one of the founding mothers of Blues Rock. She was inspired By Folk and Blues women like Odetta and Joan Baez. Raitt begins to develop her slide guitar technique, derived from Rural Blues artists such as Robert Johnson In 1970, Raitt joins Buddy Guy and Junior Wells she they open for the Rolling Stones' European tour. In 1971, the Bonnie Raittalbum is released, covering music from Blues to instrumentals Raitt called her 1989 Nick of Timealbum her first "sober" album, and it's a huge success, her first #1 album. Raitt's 1991 Luck of the Draw album hits #2 and sells three million copies Raitt serves as co-producer, co-writing four songs She wins three additional Grammy Awards. Her first Top 20 hit was "Something to Talk About," her first single from Luck of the Draw. Recorded in 1990 and released the next year, this track is one of her most popular songs, wining a Grammy The bluesy verse enters with great background vocal pads and parallel harmonies answering the lead. Influencing many young female performers, Raitt redefined the role of women in contemporary Blues. Melissa EtheridgeMelissa Ethridge was born in Leavenworth, Kansas in 1961 With her acoustic guitar and raw impassioned delivery, she is a rocker in the gutsy manner of Janis joplin. She received her first guitar at age 8 and fronted a country band at age 12. The Melissa Etheridgealbum from 1988 features a celebrated voice for those who hurt. Her Yes I Amalbum, released in1993, is considered her mainstream breakout release. "I'm the Only One" appears on the Yes I Am album The single went to #8 on the charts. Bluesy acoustic guitar sets the tempo and feel as the band enters with electric guitar, bass, and drum.
