and the detective is led on a wild goose chase since it is later learned that Regan was dead the whole time even before the novel had began and was probably murdered by his wife Vivian. Regan escapes the plight in the novel just because he was in a deep sleep, ‘the big sleep’.‘The big sleep’ does not assure of any life after death but it gives a certainty of overwhelming peace that could not be attained while alive. For instance Taylor while alive had served a sentence in jail for loving the wrong person he had suffered and he did not have any peace while alive. Taylor was the one guilty for the murder of Geiger because he was in love with Carmen and did not want her to be blackmailed again. The murder would never let him stay in peace but there was a twist of events when he is found dead. Taylor’s death is seen as a ticket to eternal peace though there is no assurance of another world but there will be no many people trailing on your back wanting to make you pay for the crimes you did.
