Students are able to determine and calculate the damping coefficient in practice using the concept of the logarithmic decrement. Students demonstrate ability to derive the equation of motion and calculate the natural frequency using Lagrange’s formulation or energy method. Review of all content is provided with emphasis on the ability to determine the response of a vibrating system from its eigen values and/or damping ratio.

Week 4 (3 days) 1 homework with 5 problems due at end of week 1 15 minute quiz Students are able to calculate effective stiffness of various beams and systems and springs in series and parallel. Students are able to determine the forced vibration response of a spring-mass system. Students review how to solve non-homogeneous differential equations using the method of undetermined coefficients. Week 5 (2 days) 1 homework with 3 problems due at end of week Students are able to discuss the phenomenon of beating and resonance. Students begin to determine the forced vibration response of spring-mass-damper system. Week 6 (2 days) 1 homework with 6 problems due at end of week 1 25 minute quiz (review for Exam 1) Students continue to determine the forced vibration response of spring-mass-damper system. Students take quiz. Students review problems.
