mom sent money as long as she could in order to get responses from the letters. This was not always possible since she was worried about the letter getting lost and while business was not going well with her father, unfortunately no money could be sent.

Juliao 2 The cinematography of the film suits perfectly into the theme that is being portrayed. A lonely and isolated mood can be absorbed from listening to her mom’s letters trying to figure out the situation of her daughter while literally giving her “news from home”. Other than the fact that there were moments where the ambient sound interfered with the voice of Akerman reading the letters, the sound effects were appropriate to the scenes and I sensed a feeling of peace and realization when the long pauses from reading letters gained protagonism in the film. I personally related the long pauses after reading the letters as a reference to the passing of time. Often the letters would skip directly to several days or even weeks after a long pause followed by a new scene. The lighting was very good, especially because it was a movie released in 1977. It showed the dull side of New York City which is usually known for its crowded and chaotic streets/alleys; instead we gained insight on this rare and mysterious New York. Personally, I believe that the lighting and scene design were some of the most powerful effects in the production of the film since they conveyed a unique style that is directly relevant to the mood of the content in the letters.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
