In general, the assurance of the essentials is one of the first objectives of the religion of Islam. Daruriyat (pl. of darurah ) occupies highest place in the list of the priorities. For they are vital for the proper administration of divine and earthly- bound affairs of Muslims. Without their satisfaction or fulfilment the normal order in society will be disrupted and malfunctioning.

Hajiyyat Hajiyat come next to daruriyyat (needs) in terms of importance. It comprises all things and activities that are not key to the preservation of faith (religion), life, intellect, offspring, and property (wealth), Despite not playing a key role in the preservation of the five principles values it is necessary for the alleviation of hardship and difficulties in life. That is, to say that a person can survive without hajiyyat, but will face hardship and difficulty in his daily life. Examples of hajiyyat include economic activities, communications, transportation, etc.

Among the measure shari’ah has taken to facilitate ease and remove hardship from the sphere of transactions is validity of specific types of contract such as salam and ijarah . They are made permissible due the people need for such contractual arrangements to satisfy their needs of financing (in the case of salam ) and residential places and offices (in the case of ijarah ). Hajiyyat is an Arabic term (pl. of hajah ) which translates into conveniences or complementary needs.

Tahsiniyyat Is the last level of the maqasid and signifies human needs comprising of things and activities that are meant for the refinement and embellishment of people's lives.
