Thirdly the idea of coexistence represented in the main character. As Sammar, who is the main character of the novel, could show us the point of view of Laila Aboulela concerning the coexisting with different people in different country. As it is too hard for such a character after the death of her husband, in addition to the contrary of feeling of the two countries can appear clearly in the novel. Sammar felt cold and grey atmosphere while living in Scotland which she did not feel in Sudan, as in Sudan she feels warmth and familiar atmosphere. But she could coexist and we can be seen in the novel itself represented in situations like: when she had the sheet paper from the mosque which includes the Times of prayer, in order to be able to pray and fast. In addition to the situation in which she was saying that she learned more things in Scotland about her own religion. Those situations could also prove this side of coexistence from the point of view of the writer.

Finally, all what can be said that the writer Leila Aboulela could represent her ideas of coexistence through the characters of Rae, Sammar, and even through her contradictory character, who is Yasmin who could not reach the harmony which Sammar reached with Rae, nor could coexist well with the county of Scotland, as this harmony succeeded between both of them. Even on the other side of the coexistence of Sammar in Scotland and the evidences could prove this through the events of the novel. So the writer could succeed to prove her point of view regarding the idea of coexistence.
