Week 6 Discussion 2 What are the differences between unearned privileges and earned privileges? Explain.
handed group. My father was left handed and always made jokes about how hard it was for him to live in a right-handed world. Honestly, I just thought it was his weird sense of humor I did not appreciate back then, until I started working in the classroom. Working in pairs, cutting, writing in a notebook and even using a computer mouse are just some of the classroom activities that affect left handed students. Right handed students did nothing to earn the ease of these tasks, unearned; and left-handed students have to work hard to accomplish these seemingly easy tasks, earned. If you are a part of the unearned privilege group for whatever reason, you might not even know that you are awarded this unearned privilege. It is not until you want or see something that you are not receiving that you become aware that earned and unearned privileges exist. As a female, I was always aware of the earned and unearned privilege based on sex. Because I was born a female, I have to work hard to earn the same privileges that males are just handed. Week 7 Discussion 1 "Ten Quick Ways to Analyze Children’s Books for Sexism and Racism" states: “[Y]oung children are exposed to racist and sexist attitudes . . . expressed over and over . . . [which] gradually distort their perceptions until stereotypes and myths about minorities and women are accepted as reality.” Do you agree with this quote? Why or why not? Explain.
