Merge Education! The last decade has seen an explosion of new programmes in design management both at the undergraduate level and the graduate level. Unfortunately most of these programmes are situated within traditional design schools that understand the task of design management as being to tweak design practices to the needs of professional business processes and aims. Seldom do we find educational programmes that offer leadership training and that understand the activities of designing as the key to creating future business success. A few new programmes are concentrating on merging design with business and science. Most of these new programmes do not arise in design schools but in business schools. Leading business schools like the Rotman School of Management, Lancaster University, Wharton University of Pennsylvania and MIT Sloan Executive Education have discovered the innovation and design arena and are busy integrating design into their business programmes. Time will tell whether this is a trend or a hype that will pass. Regardless of this, educational institutes in design must be conscious about this development and advance their own courses before losing ground. Some have already Design Leadership: Limits and Future Opportunities 409 started to do so. The Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland, is among the institutions that have taken this challenge head on. It was created by merging three established universities: Helsinki s School of Economics, the University of Art and Design, and the University of Technology into one institute. Named after the legendary Finnish architect and designer, Alvaro Aalto, the new institution pulls together various fields

of study to offer a holistic approach to design studies. Already, the university is referred to locally as the Innovation University. In bringing together experts from disparate arenas including design, media and technology to develop new approaches to common problems, the university manifests the Finnish government s conviction that innovation will come from cross-disciplinary efforts (Kao 2009). Develop Design Leadership into Value Networks for SMEs! So far, the lessons of international experience show that very few government and donor initiatives have succeeded in implementing sustainable strategies for SME development. To succeed, sustainable SME development will require concerted efforts among the various parties concerned including commercial and rural banks, leasing companies and equity providers, consulting and training firms, internet providers, as well as local business associations. (Luk cs 2005) Many members of the design community are part of the SME environment themselves. They are often fragmented and badly organized. It is difficult for a SME to identify and to approach a proper designer. It follows that designers themselves need to become more active in SME networks and use these channels to educate SMEs about their contributions. Only a few of the larger design consultancies for example, IDEO and Frog design, both based in the US

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
