Erikson identified the psychosocial crisis of adolescence as Identity vs. Role Confusion. James Marcia theorized four statuses or coping strate- gies related to identity development during adolescence. Four arenas of identity formation are faith, politics, voca- tion, and gender. Gender roles refer to the way(s) in which one chooses to express his or her masculinity or femininity. For example, will a young man pursue interests that society considers masculine such as hunting and contact sports, or will he pursue interests that society has traditionally considered feminine? Gender identity, as discussed in culture today, is a con- troversial topic as there is a great deal of debate regard- ing whether one’s identity is related to genetics, social- ization, or choice. Parents should proceed with caution if a child expresses a desire to “change” his or her gender as there are many long-term ramifications to consider. Individuals suffering from gender dysphoria frequently also display signs of depression and anxiety. Parents, teachers, youth ministers, and other influential adults must always provide support for individuals who question their biological identity as the rate of at- tempted suicide is over 40%. Depression occurs in approximately 4% to 8% of all U.S. adolescents. Girls tend to experience depression more so than boys. Rates of depression also vary along ethnic lines. Suicide is a serious problem during adolescence. It is the third leading cause of death among U.S. adolescents. Relationships with parents and siblings continue to be important in adolescence, but peer relationships gain a more important place than before. Romantic relationships can start during early and middle adolescence. From early to late adolescence, individuals
