The future of lithium-air batteries Lithium-air batteries technology is one of the next-generation technologies, which, if successful, it is expected to revolutionize the ways of life in many aspects. It will cause a paradigm shift in the ways automobiles, electronic devices and houses are powered, luckily towards the achievement of total green economies. However, for this to be achieved, lithium-air batteries have to be more efficient, environmentally friendly and cheaper. This can be achieved by the development of lithium-air batteries running on ambient oxygen. This means that they will be environmentally friendly and more sustainable and producing energy that can run electric cars and other electronic devices.
LITHIUM-AIR BATTERY TECHNOLOGY 14 The current lithium-ion batteries cannot meet the bigger energy demands in future. Currently, electricity caters for 18% of the world energy demands, while in 2050, it is expected that electricity will contribute at least 50% of the world energy demands. This means that lithium-air batteries have a big role to play in achieving this. The laboratory investigations on the lithium-air battery technology reveal a promising future, both in the aspects of energy sufficiency and environmental protection. Conclusions Research on the lithium-air batteries technology means that lithium-air batteries will become a reality in future. Though many research groups have given up on the rather costly lithium-air battery technology research, the findings on this technology do not absolutely rule out the possibility of the commercial production of lithium-air batteries. The challenges that prevent the practical development of lithium-air batteries must be addressed. The issue of deposition of byproducts of the redox reactions on the cathode of the lithium-air battery should be addressed. This could help greatly in the lengthening of the cycle life of the batteries. Additionally, there needs to be more research on the materials used for the manufacture of the electrolytes to improve the efficiency of the batteries. All the investments in this technology are not in vain as they herald a new era on the realization of total green economies in the world. The possibility of having electric cars and mobile devices running on environmentally friendly lithium-air technology is a good gesture towards the reduction in the release of greenhouse gases. This has the effect of reducing global warming and enhancing sustainability.
LITHIUM-AIR BATTERY TECHNOLOGY 15 Recommendations 1. More investment is needed in the research on lithium-air technology, to enable the reality of the commercial production of these batteries. 2. Materials science research should be intensified to develop the right materials for the practical development of lithium-air batteries.
