doing so I was able to prevent possible harm from coming to my patient when an 8-pack of suture needles were thrown onto the field and per policy I made the decision to pull off the paper covering the needles so I could visualize each one for my count. To my surprise, when I pulled off the paper cover, my 8-pack of suture with needles had eight needles with the corresponding attached suture but there was one free needle in the package behind one of the needles attached to a suture for a count of nine needles added to my sterile field instead of eight. If I had made the decision to assume the package was correct that free needle could have been lost and harm could have come to the patient. Another aspect that influences my work environment daily is professional development. The operating room is notorious for change and because of that, a
P R O F E S S I O N A L R O L E S P a g e | 11 nurse working in the OR has to be open to learning, growing, and developing professionally every day. In the operating room, there is always new technology, new and safer approaches to surgical procedures being developed and implemented. With an environment that is constantly changing a nurse working in the OR must be willing to grow consistently, both personally and professionally. An OR nurse needs to have a student mentality and has to be willing to make changes to the care they provide as suggested by new and emerging evidence-based practices. Professional development is most important in my department because I work beside every member of the interdisciplinary team between 40 and 60 hours a week, which requires me to be knowledgeable, approachable, respected and respectful, and most importantly a leader.
