above, Boxes R Us actually delivers on time more often for both regular and overnight services. The reason why Pack Rats may appear to deliver on time more often is because in total, Pack Rats has less late deliveries for both services combined. However, the type of service and the number of deliveries is the lurking variable. Boxes R Us had more late deliveries for overnight, but they also shipped 400 overnight deliveries compared to Pack Rat’s 100. Also, Boxes R Us had comparatively less late regular deliveries. d) Simpson’s Paradox Question 5 – Halifax Real Estate Listings a) *Note: the intervals on the x-axis are actually ranges or “bins” the counts fall into. Example: 200000 represents 0-200000, 400000 represents 201000-400000, etc. b) Mean = \$567,497 Standard Deviation = \$416,469.29 Median = \$450,200 Minimum = \$164,900 Maximum = \$2,490,000 The mean and median have different values. The mean is greater than the median, most likely due to a couple unusually high list prices (outliers) that skew the distribution to the right. c) Lower quartile = \$296,000 Upper quartile = \$676,225 IQR = Q3 – Q1 = \$380,225 Lower inner fence = 296,000 – 1.5 x 380,225 = \$274,337.50 Upper inner fence = 676,225 – 1.5 x 380,225 = \$1,246,562.50 Outliers \$1,300,000 \$1,395,000 \$1,399,000 \$1,425,000 \$1,575,000 \$1,579,750 \$1,599,000 \$1,895,000
