Syllabus August 23, 2019 5 COMM 203 Section 103 COURSE‐SPECIFIC POLICIES AND RESOURCES Missed or late assignments, and regrading of assessments It is your responsibility to understand what you need to prepare for class and to complete the necessary readings, pre‐assessments, and any other preparation your instructor requests. On‐time attendance is expected in all classes. There are no make‐ups for any missed in‐class activities and quizzes. You must attend your registered section to earn those marks. The ONLY exceptions will be made for medical absences that have been submitted to and verified by the Undergraduate Program Office (UGO). Cell phones and other electronic devices must be either turned off or muted during classes and may not be used in class. Laptops and tablets are NOT permitted in class. Ample research suggests that students learn better and are more engaged in laptop‐free classrooms. Grades for exams and assignments are not negotiable. If a legitimate mistake has been made, you may submit your exam or assignment for a re‐assessment; however, your whole assignment will be reviewed with the possibility that your grade could increase, decrease, or remain unchanged. Academic Concessions There are no make‐ups for any missed in‐class activities, exams, or assignments. You must attend your registered section to earn those marks and submit all the assignments on time. The ONLY exceptions will be made for medical absences that have been submitted to and verified by the Undergraduate Program Office (UGO). In the case of valid concession verified by the UGO, you are required to make up for the missed activities, assignment, or exam. Other Course Policies and Resources You are expected to have regular access to an internet-enabled device and to use it to word-process and turn in your assignments. Email is the official method of communication at UBC. While I will announce any changes in the syllabus, upcoming lectures, and other reminders in class, I will also post them to the Canvas site. It is your responsibility to check your UBC email account and Canvas regularly for announcements or messages, especially if you have been absent. Please use your official UBC email account when emailing with me so I can recognize you. I will make every effort to answer you within 24 hours Monday through Friday, barring extraordinary circumstances (i.e., travel, illness, technology failure). I check email less frequently during weekends and holidays, and may take longer to respond if you email during those times.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
