ESSAY QUESTIONS In essay test items, students are required to interprete questions, organize their responses and express themselves freely using their own words. These question items call for greater thinking, problem solving, creativity and logical thinking skills. They can also measure complex learning outcomes and they allow for originality and creativity on the side of the candidates.

Guidelines for constructing essay questions Relate questions to an instruction objective. Be clear of the task the candidate is expected to perform before you write the question. Clear wording is essential in the question for all candidates to understand the task at hand. The complexity of the question should be within the education maturity of the candidates.

In construction of essay questions, lead words( action verbs) are used to help direct the learners responses. State the features or characteristics of an object. Discuss. Give a critical account of the points involved in the topic. The pros and cons of the issue at hand must be argued.

Explain. State what happens together with how and why it happens. Evaluate. Use the information given to make a valid judgment about something. Predict. Make a logical deduction either from your own knowledge or from the information given in the question or both. Suggest. Use your own knowledge and the information in the question to give what you think is the best answer. Summarize. Give a short account of the main points of a given text.

Advantages of essay questions They test learners ability to develop logical thinking and reasonable argument. They give opportunity to learners to be more creative, select information and present it in a logical manner.
