The protection of participants was violated because the participants were exposed to extremely stressful situations that may have the potential to cause psychological harm. “Many of the participants were visibly distressed (McLeod 2007)”. Although there was visible stress, Milgram did assess these subjects a year later to ensure that no harm was done.In the Zimbardo Prisoner study, an experiment was turned into a reality and shed some light on how prisoners are treated in real life. This experiment consisted of a dozen participants (male). 12 were guards and the other 12 were the prisoners. During this experiment all ethical principles were violated from beginning to end. Subjects suffered physical, and mental abuse
while conducting this experiment. The male prisoners were put through many stressful encounters which for some resulted in the damaging of people emotionally and mentally. This environment was not safe for the prisoners nor the guards as the result of being given the authoritative position it changed the guards. Many of them did things they would not do if not given the opportunity. They were not given a role or script to follow during this experiment, however they dehumanized the subjects by taking away their names and only referring to them with their booking number. Chaining their legs as a constant reminder that their freedom was taken away and that they in fact were prisoners. The violation of respect of persons, beneficence, and justice were violated in this experiment. I believe that all three of these experiments, contributed to the creation of the Belmont Report, simply because when conducting any type of research rules must be set in place so things such as unintentional harm or stress is not caused to any subject human or animal. Although each experiment is different the basic ethical principles must be followed in order to consider the experiment ethically and morally correct. As a future psychiatrist I am very thankfulthat this report was created. Simply because experiments like Zimbardo’s prison study should never occur again. That was an eye opener of how conducting an experiment can change “normal people” when they are looking to find correlations at the expense of others safety whether mental or physical. In conclusion the Belmont Report has probably saved a lot of researchers and scientists conducting research and also giving the subjects/participants some sort of protection when they participate in these experiments.
