Impulsiveness) -Phallic Stage- (3-6 years) -Gratification from genitals -Kids become aware of sexuality and difference between males and females -Unconscious: wants to possess the opposite sex parent and remove the same sex parents -Oedipus Complex- falls in love with mom, jealous of dad, compete for mom’s attention -Eventually boys will repress feelings and identify with dad -Electra Complex- -Penis envy- males have superior organ, hate mom because females think mom castrated them -Eventually girl's fear losing mother’s love and identify with mom\ -Adult fixation: sexual deviance/dysfunctional, inappropriate relationship with parent -Latency Stage- (6- puberty/school) -Calm time internally- attention on friends -Genital stage ( puberty +) -Sexual awakening- seek sexual relationship Psychoanalysis- Dream analysis

-Freud believed that dreams were our unconscious seeking a form of expression -By analysing dream, the therapist can uncover patient’s desires and motivations -Patients would describe dream to freud -Freud dais in every dreams there was 2 dreams -Manifest content- actual dream, obvious story and characters -ex) train in tunnel then blows up -Latent content- hidden unconscious part deeper meaning, repressed ideas and wishes Neo-Freudians- de-emphasized sex as a driving force in our life -Alfred adler- we are motivated by our purpose and goals… perfections( not pleasure) is a human motivator -Inferiority complex- (in the subconscious/childhood) we feel inferior to others in some way make us overcompensate -Causing us to strive for self improvement and perfection -Adler also pioneered birth order Carl Jung- collective unconscious- human mind has characteristics “imprinted” on it as a result of evolution. They are from ancestral past -We have a set of images common to all human experiences- called archetypes (come out in dreams, literature, art, or religion) Karen Horney- emphasizing environmental and cultural, rather than biological causes for issues -She said unhappiness comes from trying to live up to a false self -Anxiety (neurosis) is created when our security is threatened -Rejected penis envy- women envy men’s independence, success and freedom they are denied because they are female
