Conclusion The goal of this lab was to understand the behavior of light when it reflects from an optical surface and when it passes from one optical medium to another. We used pins placed at different locations and a mirror to test reflection. When we drew the ray diagram and measured the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection, we saw that they were both the same. When we tested refraction of light with a piece of glass we used Snell’s law to find the index of refraction of the glass. We did this by measuring the angle of the light going into the glass, the angle of the light coming out of the glass and then connecting the entrance and exit points of the light to find the angle of refraction. We then used the equation n 1 Sinθ 1 =n 2 Sinθ 2 and solved for n 2 . N 2 is the index of refraction of the glass and we know that n 1, which is the index of refraction of air, is 1. We found that the index of refraction of the glass is 1.59.
