By the end, I felt like my writing was more sophisticated and an improvement from high school. But coming into WR150 seemed to a step backwards for me. Not only did I not progress immensely as I had hoped, I also had to relearn the basics. Paper 1, paper 2 and paper 3 all exemplified the same issue: an original argument. Despite not being able to show progression, I feel as though I still grew as a writer and learned techniques to strengthen those fundamentals that I need. Paper 1 was nerve-racking. Mostly because I didn’t know what to expect or even what was expected of me. Luckily, Professor Prentice gave guidance and direction. Exercise 2 was really a stepping-stone to my first paper because it explicitly drew out the opinions of the two scholars we focused on and how our own opinions differed from them. Prentice asked the class to pick our own topic about Winesburg, Ohio and find what Fussell and Szczesiul say about it. Also, we had to come up with our own opinion on the

4 matter as well (Exercise 2 11-12). I thought this exercise would be sufficient in developing my argument and I didn’t think it would be difficult to write a strong first essay. However, the peer review and draft comments I received told me otherwise. When Suzanna reviewed my paper, I asked her to on the fluidity of my points and body paragraphs. However, there was another concern that she had with my paper. In her notes, she wrote, “I feel that you could use some more analysis in some of the points that you make” (qtd. in Exercise 2 13). This was the first indication that my argument needed work. My professor had similar opinions as Suzanna. My main problem was my argument as a whole. He said in his comments, “You have not proven to me that your argument truly responds to a problem in the existing scholarship as represented by F and S” (qtd. in Paper 1 Draft 1 Comments 20). Furthermore, he didn’t feel as if my analysis was not sufficient enough. At that point, I realized that my writing was flawed and I faced a big problem. I knew I wasn’t the best writer, but I also knew that my fundamentals weren’t completely there and without those, I would never improve. At that point, my goals for the class changed: I would work on learning the essentials of writing. I ended up doing fairly well on my first paper but I was still determined to do better. The exercises we did in class offered me new approaches to finding a solid argument. One of the exercises was to find three problematic ideas in or about the novel In Our Time. We had to come up with questions, which would eventually be our arguments, about these problematic aspects (Exercise 7 29). However, this was different because we weren’t give two scholars to evaluate as well. We had to find our own scholars that would relate to the questions we wanted to focus on. The next step was creating our annotated bibliography and prospectus. I never wrote an annotated
